The first hull of the FoX 950 is now sailing...! Early trials have been very promising.

Hi all,
Here is the report from the test sail i did on the boat a couple of weeks ago. It's obviously a little biased, but everyone that has sailed onboard the boat is really enthusiastic about her and can agree with my observations (including third parties like an ex mini transat sailor and a sailing journalist).

Date: 2008 October, 11-12-13th
Location: Elbe estuary, to the NW of Hamburg
(Therefore limited by the width of the river and the intense cargo ship traffic)
Conditions: Calm sea, Variable winds from 4 to 15 kts

General Report:

The yacht looks great from virtually every angle. Her lines flow nicely. The finish work on this prototype is not great and there are some details of equipment missing, such as some chafe protection fittings, toerails, the floor boards inside are only temporary… This will of course all be corrected on the future production boats, as well as on the prototype during the coming winter “fit-out”.

The ergonomics in the cockpit feel right and everything works well both with complete or shorthanded crew (just missing the toe rails for the helmsman). All control lines are easily reached and the loads are ok to deal with. The moderate size of the boat also helps keeping things not too far from each others. The main sheet track and central console close effectively the aft of the cockpit and provide some welcome support at heel. The area to the rear of the track is large enough to make an ideal relaxing area when fast cruising.

The mainsail is easily dealt with thanks to the fine trim of the sheet and the traveller, both with good purchase ratios. The loads in the main trim of the sheet are quite high in the breeze. The position of the main sheet cleats has to be moved forward a bit so as not to interfere with the tillers. No problem either to hoist the sail, even short handed (the halyard was set directly during the test and there is even a possibility of having a 2:1 setup). The non overlapping jib is quite large due to mast being set a bit further back than usual. Despite its area and power, the sail is managed with no troubles with the size 44 primary Harken winch and the 3D clew trim system. (one can really place the clew of the sail where needed, provided the sail is cut with a high enough clew) The 3 spinnakers have been tested: a rather flat code 5 (60 m²), a code 3 (85 m²) and a code 2 (115m²). The max kite enables the boat to become truly lively as soon as 8-10 kts of wind, depending on the angle (instead of 15 kts on more conventional boats). Here again, no problem to handle these generously sized sails and one doesn’t worry about the breeze filling in.

In terms of performance, the boat meets the predicted polars, sometime doing even better. In race conditions with a short handed crew, the boat is truly lively and responsive, accelerating at the smallest gust, thanks to the power developed by the hull and deep keel. Once the ballast filled up (or the complete crew on the rail during the test) the boat then behaves much more like a bigger boat. Accelerations are less pronounced, but the boat powers through with a good average speed. The critical speed of 8kts is quickly reached, at which point the wake starts breaking free from the transom.

Inisde, the volume is quite impressive, thanks to the minimum use of bulkheads. The lateral portlights and the companion way bring a lot of light inside, which is further reflected by the white finish, highlighted by some teak lists. The layout makes sail handling, staking and moving around the boat very easy. In cruising configuration, the table to the front of the mast will gather 4 to 6 guests, while the aft cabins can be transformed into double beds.
