How much Payload a Mini can handle?
« on: January 28, 2009, 00:20:10 AM »
Hallo all,

I am a little curious about the maximum payload a Mini can handle.

How much is the weight of a Mini when it starts the Minitransat with everything (gear, provisioning and Skipper) on board?

Does anybody have some numbers, hints or thoughts?

Hallo again,

more than 50 people already viewed this thread and nobody has any idea on how much a Mini (series or proto) does weight on the start of the minitransat? Any sugestions?

The only thread I found about a maximal weight is http://www.minitransat650.com/simple/index.php?topic=1428.0 where a guy named Jure Šterk has circumnavigated the world with a mini (coco) and that his boat had a weight of about 3600kg at the lift in capetown.

But this seems a little overweight to me ;) .

No one with a estimation?

Thanks in advance,

Aki

People generaly don't response well on wiseases ;)
But here goes:
For 2nd leg of transat, proto on the lower limit...
Skiper 50-100+
120l of watter
about 10kg of food (freezdried, powders, energybars...)
Tools, medical kit, safety equipement: aprox 40kg
Clothes: 10+kg (with TPS)
Total: just below 200kg + skipper

Than you have sails, electronics... depends how you define payload.

I see. aprox. 300-350 kg. If i add sails and the other stuff so there would be aprox. 400-500kg. This is a hint. Thanks Andraz.

The max payload I had in mind was how many kg can be carried with a mini and still can be sailed good.
I know that weight is essential in Racing. But if you also want to stay sometime with your boat then you must carry some stuff with you, especially if you want to go with family.

Hi Aki,

A few years ago a small group prepared specs for the design of a Mini.  In that effort the group estimated what the boat would need to carry.  I think the discussion still exists on Leo's site.  If you can't find it I will take a look.

That will be because Andraz has sailed MIni's for 4 years.

Built them too.

And is a top skipper - you should pay him for his advice.

Thnx for this Info Hedgehog, but I already know who Andraz is. I'm maybe new to the Mini's but I learn fast.. ;)
And I appreciate it that he shares his knowledge with me.

Are you also a known Sailor and minTransat Participant? I'm only curious. ;)

Hey Goly,
Still driving BMW?
Seascapes actualy running suprisingly well. Closing to 20 in only 5 months. First race in few weeks with 10 boats on the line and some interesting owners.
But mising some serious racing to be honest. My 510 is stil in Lorient so maybe (but not likely) I might try to beter my two 3rds on this year Fastnet :)

BMW gone. Didn't like the idea to organize a party for her 18th birthday;)
Invested in japaneese technology. So instead dark, metallic BMW - pink (almost!) Toyota;)

So... looks like SS18 was a very good idea. Congratulations!
