Thanks Leo,
Do you have any suggestions for how to fix the bearing to tiller and deck ??

Here's 2 pics of my current set-up which I'm looking to change..
Stainless pin in the top of the pic is located through the deck,
a backing plate either side with 4 small bolts/nuts holds it in place,
but the stainless u-bolt pictured keeps unthreading as it holds
all the plastic centre bushes in place if that all makes sense :)

any ideas anyone ??

cheers
andy..

What  I recall on protos, stainless steel pin through tiller, underdeck a hollow cylinder welded on ring, pin through cylinder, bolt and ring. TO fix it , locktite bleu or two bolts...

ok, lets use a sketch program...

Bleu tiller, yellow deck thickness,
Between tiller and deck a wide delrin plate, but a thin one.
Black and red is stainless,
green is bolt.

THere must be better solutions :)

I only build this kind of shit with autopilot underdecks... so much bigger pin...
And of course you can make it out of carbon too ...

Cheers Leo...
your website is better than your drawings :)
But they all make sense and are almost the same as I currently have.
So if I could replace stainless with carbon would be good..

I had been looking closely at the Naicra tiller, but haven't worked out
how they have secured it..

Anyway, there's another beer coming your way for the help..

Naciara tiller looks like the Zero, even the alu plate underneath for the autopilot... and who constructed that one... :)
its a delrin socket through deck, delrin pin on the tiller goes through it.
on the delrin pin between deck and tiller there is an alu part fixed to the delrin pin, same under deck.
On this underdeck the autopilot is connected.
Want to engage the autopilot... drop a pin through tiller and alu part... hit auto on pilot...

THis way you do not have the more heavy feeling of an autopilot always in the system...

Did see a photo on the internet of the Nacira tiller setup, can not find it any more, do you know where it is ?

A few pics on 724's blog... (hope Chris doesn't mind me sharing these)

Lots of delrin used !!
Is carbon an option ???
Not trying to re-invent the wheel, just wondering if it's been done before..

cheers

Carbon is forbidden in serie boats, ideal you would have a carbon kevlar pin and cylinder, with a very thin delrin bus as smoothing bearing between pin and cylinder.
Bet some use just carbon and dry lube it.

Actually the inner stuff of the Nacira seems to be alu.... outer cylinder looks like delrin.
Maybe the whole above deck and pin is alu, take maine grade and it is not a bad idea.. Nacira is not a copycat, good for them, they try to improve shit :)
End plate is alu, I had the nke or raymarine ram mounted on the top, the pin was a bit longer...

O, other pad on the back for NAcira, lamination seems to be nicely done.

PS, is there an engineer that can make that NKE (L&S) oilreservoir out of thinwalled alu instead of this plastic that tends to break near the bolt.....
