Virtual reality mini tour
« on: April 12, 2007, 11:14:20 AM »
Hi,

just been playing around with cameras and computers and came up with this virtual reality tour of GBR 500's interior. She's waiting to go for refit, so the keel's out and she looks shabby, but it could be usefull for anyone who wants to look inside a proto.

Hey Leo,

Umm, it took me a while to learn how to do it, but once you understand the programs it's kind of easy.

Essentially, you have to take a series of still pictures that overlap for the entire 360 x 180 degrees I.e. all the way round and above and below. The amount of pictures depends on what lens you have, a fisheye is what I used and so only needed about 8 pics. Then you use a program like ptgui to stitch the pictures together into a panorama, and another program like pano2qtvr to turn that into the immersive VR.

The most difficult bit is that you must keep the camera lens rotating about one single so called 'nodal point' to avoid parallax, but if you have a slightly modified tripod, that's easy. The http://www.panoguide.com/ site is a good place to learn about it.

Once you have it sorted, it takes about an hour to make one.
