Classe V liferafts
« on: June 18, 2011, 00:41:06 AM »
Hello everybody!

As the new classe rules say, users of classe V liferafts must have a container close to the raft with all the equipment not included in the liferaft to compy with solas specification.

Anybody knows or has a list of all the extra material required?

Thanks!

It´s described in Classe Mini info number 18: - Ils doivent être accompagnés d’un container de survie équipé du matériel contenu dans un radeau conforme ISO 9650.

Thanks - that update doesn't appear on the English language version of the website.  I have a Class V so I'll need to look at that for the Transat.
Annoyingly I hadn't seen that before I got my liferaft serviced, because it effectively becomes worthless (at least in the class) at the end of this year.

I also still have the Classe V. According to the last revision the raft contains:

parachute rocket
3 handflares
smoke signal
anti-seasickness tablets
first aid kit
drinking water
emergency ration
battery for electric light
battery for torch
torch

I cannot find information on quantities and things like sea anchor etc. Do you have more info in your life-raft documents?

I suspect that almost everything we need is already in the bidon de survie.  I've sent an e-mail to Sandrine at the Classe Association asking for confirmation.

I think the bet thing to do is to get the information straight from the Classe, rather than trying to figure it out ourselves and potentially getting it wrong.

I recall that in the old pilot used in France, there was a list of things in a Class V.
And in the Plastime catalogue, but the new one does not have the CV listed anymore, so if someone can find an old one :)

And then compare the lists.

My Bombard Classe V 6 person container liferaft contains only 6 hand flares, 2 parachute rockets and 4 batteries. The company that makes my revisions is preparing a list and budget of the rest of safety equipment which is needed to comply with SOLAS requirements... which yes, is probably all included in the survival container, but maybe the class wants us to have it doubled for Class V users? :S

Let's see what they answer about it...

I think you have to double it, weird but maybe true. And maybe the reason is that its unfair to the Iso liferaft owners, and knowing that some minisailors are idiots about weight, they will for hunt an old  Classe V liferaft, instead of just buying a new Iso. I believe in the past there was even someone busted who had emptied the container of all, just a bare polyester housing....

I've written to the class, and will let you know what I hear.
