Mini USA 176
« on: April 10, 2016, 06:09:00 AM »
Hi,
Dose anybody have any info or experience with mini #176?
I know it's an older boat with water ballast but is it semi competitive?
Any info on water ballast systems as well would be cool.
I wouldn't be sailing it on the circuit but PHS racing mainly, but want something that's not super slow or has a bad history.
From the research I've already done it was in America for a while before heading over to do the transat. (It's currently in AUS)

Hi James,

Great to see you back onboard!

Regarding the boat: Jesse placed 43rd with it in the MT in 2009. It would be best to ask Jesse what he thinks the boat is capable of and what probably not. My personal take on it is that it's underpowered in comparison to most protos you will likely sail against in the current circuit, but it's still a capable boat (for PHS sailing in that case). Here are some additional information on it:

If you need a contact for Jesse let me know.

Cheers,
Thomas

From the previous owner of #116 (Le Poisson, Ellen MacArthur's Mini):

Quote
Very difficult here to gain an entry for any race due to insurance & size limitations for mini racing. [...] he may be able to do harbour racing, but probably not offshore. AMS is handicap system here that would give him a rating to compete in.

Will keep on digging.

I think the only real offshore race in this area which you can do is the solo trans tasman, 2 mini have previouly competed, Chris Sayer in Navman and phill in wild child.
I'm pretty happy to sail alongside other to see how you go.
