Title: Open Source Design project?

New member to the forum - lookng for a design to build.  There are features of the Dix mini, Lombard Zero, Pogo2, and Dingo that I like, but all would require MAJOR design revisions before construction.  None of the CNC kits would work for me either.  I stumbled upon the OSD site, looked at the initial design - and that might be the best starting place for me.

Anyone else still aboard the project?  I have an airplane hanger, server, and satellite ISP bandwidth to host the build.

Bueller?  Anyone?

What sort of mini are you looking to build? The boats you listed except for the Dix are series boats so are not boats that could be raced as a Series if not built by their registered builder.
What sort of design revisions are you anticipating?
Not trying to start any sort of flame war, just get a clearer picture of what you have in mind.

All of the mini's I listed can be built as a proto - as long as there is enough of a design alteration to respect the 'patent' of the design.  All of the production boats are layup's - but could be modified for a home built proto.

What attracted me to the OSYD project is that the final plans would be open source.  The last update to the site was almost 5 years ago.  The 'team' set a design parameter of final weight, listed the hull displacement curve, and a prismatic coefficient of 0.526.  Technology has moved ahead since then...

I want to build a mini that is fast, light, spacious - and takes advantage of new materials.  I live in the southern part of New Mexico, where the boat will be trailered to a nearby lake for testing.  Looking over Leo V's excellent website - I can see that trailering might also be an issue.  The draft on the Dix plans are 2 m., while most production boats are now 1.7 m.  Most of the production boats are also moving into a chine war, away from the radius chine.

This looked like a project that lost wind, and I wanted to see if there might be interest to get back to work on it.

I would think that the first big question is whether you are looking to build a potentially competitive Proto mini or build a boat that that is a mini but first and foremost is a nice boat. This is not to say the two options are mutually exclusive but the newer Protos are a very different animal than say a Pogo2 or what is outlined in the OSD pages. Design-wise the TransAt winner is fairly close to a P2 but with all carbon construction with a canting keel, canting and rotating wing mast, daggerboards and many other items. Speed wise, generally a modern Proto is between 5-10% faster than a Series boat, Franciso Lobato's results in Leg 1 of the TransAt notwithstanding.
Presently there is some talk within the Mini Class as to whether to have a third division which would be older protos and boats built to the Series rules but do not have the numbers sailing to be a series.
I think there's nothing wrong with either goal for a boat but that decision is a pretty critical one

   I am biulding a new design, mostlly my own with some design work by a nz designer.
  The hull has a chine ,is water ballast, is 9 ft beam but a powered up hull shape, was
originally going to be a sieries design but decided to go with a deeper lighter keel and
will also be going with a forte carbon spar.  The hull construction is cold molded bottom
a 1/2 rip sheet 2ft wide of 9mm ply for the topsides. Deck is a3-4mm ply inside 1/2inch
core and carbon/s glass outside. Keel is lifting, weight will be about 1800# with battery
and biult in foam under v berth and quarter berths.
    I have turned the hull over and finished interior bulkheads /framing, working on
deck now, should be in the water no later than sping 2011 .

Very interested in the design and construction method you're doing.
Would love to see your boat...where are you building?
