Title: Glas-based core materials
Post by: Sailorman on March 24, 2007, 08:06:09 AM
Hello!

Recently I have seen new edition of mini rules 2007 especially i was interested in paragraph "S-1 - AUTHORIZED MATERIALS". There is an addition about glas-based core materials.

Please explain what it is the glas-based?

I think they mean the materials used by infusion processes,
thinking hard of what they could mean otherwhise... foam is allowed, that aint glass,
coremat is allowed, (kind of vilt)

PS to make it clear, its in the serie rules...

No, no sandwich in the hull. S-1-a describes the materials and methods of using them for the hull. So does S-1-b for the deck. In S-1-b (deck) sandwich construction is expressively allowed. In S-1-a (hull) the word sandwich is not mentioned, therefore it is not allowed. Core material only means the reinforcing fibres of the (massive) laminate itself. So you can build your series production boat either in wood (then you may use epoxy as resin or glue) or glass (then you may use only polyester as resin). And the glass laminate may be done by hand , the old way hand laminated, or the modern way as a polyester infusion. That's it, anything else is not allowed. No glass/epoxy laminate, which would not be as heavy as polyester, no aramid, no sandwich, no prepregs...
