Following the call for tender about the organization of the 2009 and 2011 editions of the Mini Transat, the board of the Classe Mini, at the end of the meeting on november 18th 2007, decided to institute an annual transatlantique race from 2009 and for 4 years (contrary to each 2 years until now).

The organizing selected are :

- For 2009 and 2011 editions : GRAND PAVOIS ORGANISATION with a course LA ROCHELLE - MADERE - SALVADOR DE BAHIA (BRAZIL).

- For 2010 and 2012 editions : WINCHES CLUB with a course DOUARNENEZ - MADERE - KOUROU (GUYANE).

I'm curious how they will handle the history of the Mini Transat when shifting to an annual format.  Will the new races "count" as Mini Transat races in terms of historical continuity?  In other words, will the historical record treat the new races as part of the ongoing historical tradition?  Or will they be treated as "new" races for Mini 6.5 boats?

Personally I think this is a great idea, although it means in any given year you will have a different mix of competitors, and if you were hoping to go up against a particular competitor one year and he/she doesn't enter, then perhaps you will be disappointed?  Probably not, I bet.  Sailing a Transat is sailing a Transat, regardless of who you're racing against.  As they say, line up two boats and someone shout "Go!" and you have a race.

Anyway, this will be terrific given how oversubscribed the current Transat is.  A much less logistical trouble than having one Transat for 160 boats.

what are you talking about? it does not takes an awful lot of effort to browse the starting lists of this year's races. Do that and you will see how oversubscribed they are. Acores race is down to 21 starters, Fastnet was not full, in fact not a single race this season wasn't  topped. Gues it is a normal period of recuperation after a crazy two races in 05 and 07.

Maybe it's like Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France.  Some folks only come out the for the big one.

My point was simply that for the past several years there have been a lot more people wanting to do the Transat than there are places for them.  I didn't say that was the case for every other Mini event.  In fact, I don't recall ever reading about any other Mini race being oversubscribed.

In fact the massive oversubscribtion on the "other" races (30 on the WL for the Fastnet, 60 for the Transgascogne...) was the biggest problem in qualifying for the Transat 07. At the end everbody that stayed on the waiting list for the Transat got to the startline thanks to Yves le Blevec.

Looking at sales numbers series and selling time second hand protos, less sailors racing, it looks like the top has passed in popularity... but everything goes in waves...

Not sure how it is in Europe right now, but the U.S. economy is in the toilet.  Anyone buying a boat today is probably planning to live in it after they lose their home to foreclosure.  Hopefully, after we send the current U.S. government to the ICC in the Hague we can focus on cleaning up the mess they have created.
